Diabetes Duration: Is 8 Years the Tipping Point for Retinopathy Risk?
6 Dec 2024 • New research explored the non-linear relationship between diabetes duration and the onset of diabetic retinopathy (DR).
- Analyzing 420 patients, researchers found that for those with less than 8 years of diabetes, the risk of DR increased by 24% with each additional year of diabetes duration.
- However, after 8 years, the risk plateaued, showing no significant increase despite further duration.
This suggests a threshold effect, where the risk of DR rises sharply up to 8 years but levels off afterward, highlighting the importance of early intervention in managing diabetes to prevent retinal complications.
