Wearable Tech Device Can Adapt to Strain, Simulating Human Pain Perception

17 Jan 2025 • Scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, have developed a novel neuromorphic device that mimics human pain perception through a flexible material embedded with a network of silver wires.

The device can sense strain and adapt its electrical response over time, similar to how the human body adapts to repeated pain. When the material is stretched, small gaps form in the silver network, temporarily breaking the electrical pathway. An electric pulse prompts the silver to fill these gaps, "remembering" the strain and adjusting its response with each stretch.

This breakthrough, published in Materials Horizons, creates a dynamic system that combines sensing and memory, paving the way for advanced wearable health monitoring systems and safer, more intuitive robotic technologies capable of adapting to stress and human interactions.
