Intensive Glucose Control Proven to Reduce Vascular Risk Across Age and Duration in Diabetes
13 Dec 2024 • As per new evidence, intensive glucose lowering may be recommended for all patients, regardless of when diabetes is diagnosed or how long they’ve had it.
According to the ADVANCE trial analyzing 11,138 participants, the benefits of intensive glucose management were consistent across different age groups at diabetes diagnosis and varying diabetes durations. Intensive glucose lowering significantly reduced the risk of major macrovascular and microvascular events (HR 0.90). The benefits were consistent across subgroups defined by age (≤50, >50–60, >60 years) and diabetes duration (≤5, >5–10, >10 years).
Similar consistent treatment effects were also observed for all-cause death, cardiovascular death, and the components of major vascular events.
