Training 50,000 Physicians to Combat Cervical Cancer in India

16 Jan 2025 • In an effort to eliminate cervical cancer in India, 50,000 physicians, including gynecologists and pediatricians, serving in Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities are set to be trained under FOGSI's experts.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in India but can be prevented and treated when detected early. The program aims to address vaccine hesitancy and increase HPV vaccine uptake, which is vital in preventing cervical cancer.

This initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI). Under this MoU, a one-year training program will be conducted at the prestigious All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AICOG) conference, held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

Around the world, efforts to eliminate cervical cancer include vaccinating 90% of girls aged 9-14 against HPV. The HPV vaccine has been shown to be highly effective in preventing infections that cause cervical cancer.
