First-of-Its-Kind Kidney Transplant for Ultra-Rare ‘Bombay’ Blood Group in India
10 Feb 2025 • Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre has made medical history by performing India’s first kidney transplant for a patient with the extremely rare ‘Bombay’ blood group.
Pooja, a 30-year-old woman from Shirdi, had been battling kidney failure since 2022, facing immense challenges in finding a compatible donor.
Initially misdiagnosed as having an 'O' blood group, she was correctly identified at Jaslok Hospital. With no compatible donors available, her mother (B positive) stepped forward, despite the incompatibility. The transplant team employed a specialized desensitization protocol, closely monitoring antibody levels to reduce rejection risk.
Led by nephrologists, urologists, anesthetists, and blood bank specialists, the multidisciplinary team meticulously planned and executed the complex procedure. This landmark surgery sets a precedent in renal transplantation for rare blood groups.
