Sex Differences in Steatotic Liver Disease: Who's at Higher Risk?
5 Dec 2024 • A large study on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) highlights key sex differences in liver and nonliver health outcomes.
- Women had a 9% higher risk of developing cirrhosis compared to men.
- Men had an 11% higher risk of hepatic decompensation and more than double the risk of HCC (159% higher risk).
- Additionally, men faced a 40% higher risk of CVD, a 16% higher risk of chronic kidney disease, and a 32% higher risk of non-sex-specific cancers.
This evidence underscores the need for tailored sex-based management strategies for MASLD.
