New Guidelines Redefine Obesity for Asian Indians
18 Jan 2025 • A new set of guidelines for diagnosing obesity in Asian Indians was developed, addressing the limitations of the 2009 BMI-based criteria.
The expert-driven Delphi process led to the classification of two stages of obesity: Stage 1, characterized by increased adiposity (BMI >23 kg/m²) without functional impairments; and Stage 2, where significant adiposity (both generalized and abdominal) leads to organ dysfunction, daily activity limitations, and co-morbid conditions.
Stage 2 obesity requires a BMI exceeding 23 kg/m², excess waist circumference or waist-to-height ratio, and at least one symptom indicating functional limitations or obesity-related diseases.
This updated framework aims to improve the identification of obesity and its associated risks in Asian Indians, providing a more precise basis for management and treatment. It aligns with global initiatives to redefine obesity and promotes a more rational approach to obesity care.
