Obesity Drives Diabetes Risk in Psoriasis Patients, Study Shows
10 Feb 2025 • A study highlights obesity as a key factor linking psoriasis to an increased risk of developing diabetes.
Analyzing data from 21,835 participants, the study found that individuals with psoriasis were 48% more likely to develop diabetes (OR = 1.48). Additionally, the prevalence of diabetes was higher among older adults compared to younger individuals at the same BMI levels.
In men, psoriasis prevalence decreased as BMI exceeded a certain threshold, while younger adults showed a similar trend. The study also indicated that obesity partially mediated the association between psoriasis and diabetes, accounting for approximately 22.91% of the relationship.
These findings highlight the critical role of managing obesity in psoriasis patients to reduce the risk of diabetes, calling for a more integrated approach to care for individuals with both conditions.
