Rising Burden of Rheumatoid Arthritis in India: A Closer Look at Regional Trends

31 Jan 2025 • A study using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database revealed a significant increase in the burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in India from 1990 to 2021, with higher incidence, prevalence, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY) rates observed in women.

The highest incidence occurred in the 65-69 age group, and prevalence peaked at 75-79 years. Regional variations were notable, with Uttarakhand reporting the highest male prevalence and Tamil Nadu the highest for females.

The forecast predicts continued growth in RA incidence and prevalence from 2022 to 2036. Areas with higher Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) saw a higher disease burden, though Kerala, despite its high SDI, exhibited a lower RA burden.

The findings emphasize the need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment, especially for women in India.
