Preventing Hepatitis B Reactivation: AGA's Latest Clinical Guidelines

24 Jan 2025 • Hepatitis B reactivation (HBVr) can be triggered by immune-modulating factors, such as medications and pre-existing conditions. To address this risk, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has issued updated clinical practice guidelines to provide clinicians with clear, evidence-based recommendations.

Key recommendations: -Antiviral prophylaxis strongly advised for individuals at high risk of HBVr. -A conditional recommendation for antiviral prophylaxis is made for those at moderate risk. -For individuals at low risk, monitoring without antiviral prophylaxis is suggested. Monitoring should occur every 1 to 3 months and include testing for hepatitis B viral load and alanine aminotransferase levels. -HBV Testing strongly recommended for anyone considered to be at risk.

These guidelines emphasize on the importance of early detection, careful monitoring, and timely intervention to minimize the risk of serious liver complications and improving patient outcomes.
