Subtotal Gastrectomy: A Promising Option for Upper Third Gastric Cancer
27 Jan 2025 • Subtotal gastrectomy (STG) offers several advantages over total gastrectomy (TG) for patients with upper third gastric cancer, according to a study.
Key Findings
- The results showed that STG had a significantly shorter operation time (mean difference: −20.79 minutes) and was associated with fewer complications.
- Additionally, STG patients experienced less body weight loss, with reductions of 5.31% at 6 months and 6.13% at 12 months, compared to TG.
- STG also had a lower incidence of reflux esophagitis (0% vs. 7.7%), although this difference was not statistically significant.
While survival outcomes varied across reports, the shorter recovery time and reduced complications suggest that STG may be an ideal choice for patients, offering both clinical benefits and improved quality of life post-surgery.
