New Insights on Antibiotic Strategies for Managing Recurrent UTIs in Peri- & Postmenopausal Women
20 Dec 2024 • In women with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), treatment with a 1-month course of treatment-strength antibiotics had a significantly lower risk of subsequent UTI within 12 months compared to women receiving ≥3-months of low-dose prophylactic antibiotics.
- In a study of adult women presenting with acute uncomplicated UTI, women were offered either: 1) treatment-strength antibiotic therapy for 1 month; or 2) up to 7 days of treatment-strength antibiotics followed by ≥3-months of low-dose prophylactic antibiotics.
- Women receiving extended treatment-dose therapy experienced a 34.9% recurrence rate over 12 months, versus 59.6% in those on prophylaxis.
- Final analyses confirmed a 58% lower odds of recurrence (aOR 0.42).
