Intensive Glucose Management Using CGM in Hospitalized Type 2 Diabetes Patients: No Clear Advantage?
23 Nov 2024 • In new research, researchers reported no improved glucose levels with the CGM approach over the standard glucose management in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes..
The trial was conducted across six academic hospitals on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) vs standard glucose management among 110 type 2 diabetic adults hospitalized in the non–intensive care unit. - The mean glucose levels among the participants showed a minimally higher value in the standard group (175mg/dL) than the CGM group (170mg/dL).
- Only 7% of the CGM group achieved the target glucose range of 90-130mg/dL. - Severe hypoglycemia was rare, with just one event in the standard group, and CGM readings below 54mg/dL occurred infrequently in both groups.
The findings suggest CGM may not provide substantial advantages in glucose control in the hospital setting and that a glucose target of 90-130mg/dL may not be realistic in the current environment of insulin management in the hospital.
