Neonatal Acidemia Linked to Long-Term Neurological Risks: Study Reveals Key Associations
21 Feb 2025 • A large cohort study tracking over 35,000 births reveals that neonatal acidemia, defined by an umbilical cord arterial pH <7.05, is associated with an increased risk of death and long-term neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
The study found that 2.5% of births had acidemia, with a significant increase in cerebral palsy (adjusted HR 4.35) and epilepsy (adjusted HR 1.71) in this group.
This highlights the potential for early pH measurement as a predictive marker for severe neurological outcomes.
