10 Dec 2024 • In a first, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued guidelines to detect ""fake patients"" during inspections of medical colleges and facilities.

• The move aims to curb malpractice by institutions inflating bed occupancy or investigation metrics to gain approval for new institutes or increased UG/PG seats.
• Red flags include a sudden spike in admissions before inspections, multiple patients from the same family, cases requiring only OPD-level care, and lack of evidence for necessary investigations or treatments like IV fluids or injections.

These measures aim to uphold transparency and credibility in medical education and services.
