Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Doubles Coronary Artery Disease Risk
5 Feb 2025 • Adults with newly detected diabetes mellitus face a hidden cardiovascular risk, with coronary artery disease (CAD) being twice as prevalent in this group compared to non-diabetics (40.7% vs. 20.1%).
Coronary CT angiography also showed a greater burden of obstructed vessels (0.72 vs. 0.42). Moreover, newly diagnosed diabetes emerged as an independent risk factor for significant CAD (OR: 2.153).
Despite being asymptomatic, these individuals may harbor undetected coronary stenosis, underscoring the urgency of proactive cardiovascular screening to enable early intervention and reduce long-term complications.
