First Suspected Guillain-Barré Death in Maharashtra; Pune Hits 100+ Cases
27 Jan 2025 • Maharashtra has reported its first suspected death from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis. This incident has raised alarm as the number of GBS cases in the state continues to rise, with Pune alone reporting over 100 cases.
GBS is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, often following a viral or bacterial infection. The condition can develop rapidly over days or weeks and can affect people of all ages, though it is more common in adults and males. While GBS is rare, with an estimated occurrence of 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 people, its exact causes remain unclear.
The state’s health department has urged residents to stay alert and seek immediate medical help if they experience symptoms like sudden muscle weakness, tingling sensations, or trouble breathing.
