Bleeding After Anticoagulation: A Crucial Red Flag for Hidden Cancer
21 Feb 2025 • A cohort study of 119,480 elderly patients with atrial fibrillation revealed a strong association between post-anticoagulation bleeding and new cancer diagnoses.
Key Findings:
- Within 2 years of starting anticoagulants, 21.8% of patients experienced bleeding, and 4.9% were diagnosed with malignancy.
- Bleeding significantly increased cancer risk (HR: 4.0).
- Higher risks for malignancies like gastrointestinal (HR: 15.4), genitourinary (HR: 11.8), and respiratory (HR: 10.1).
- Notably, cancers were detected at an earlier stage in patients with antecedent bleeding.
