Widespread Micronutrient Deficiencies Among Type 2 Diabetes Patients
31 Jan 2025 • A comprehensive meta-analysis of 132 studies with over 52,000 participants has revealed that nearly half (45.3%) of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) suffer from multiple micronutrient deficiencies, including vital vitamins and minerals.
Key Findings
- The analysis showed that women with T2D were more likely to have deficiencies compared to men, with a prevalence rate of 48.6% in women compared to 42.6% in men.
- Among the most common deficiencies, vitamin D stood out, affecting 60.5% of patients, followed by magnesium at 41.9% and vitamin B12 at 28.7%.
- Notably, those who were on metformin had higher rates of vitamin B12 deficiency.
These findings underscore the need for targeted nutritional strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies in T2D patients, particularly in women, to optimize diabetes management and prevent complications.
