India Takes Crucial Step, Bans Refurbished Medical Devices for Better Healthcare
21 Jan 2025 • India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has implemented a ban on the import of refurbished medical devices, effective from January 10, 2025.
This regulatory action is intended to safeguard patient safety, promote local innovation, and strengthen India's healthcare ecosystem. Industry leaders have lauded the decision, emphasizing its role in supporting the 'Make in India' and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.
This step aims to prevent the influx of unregulated products and to foster the growth of indigenous medical device manufacturing. India’s action aligns with similar policies seen in other sectors, where second-hand or refurbished goods are prohibited, to prevent the country from becoming a dumping ground for low-quality products.
This ban also serves as a critical step in preventing the potential rise of e-waste in India and ensures that the country's medical infrastructure remains robust and world-class.
