Young Adults with Metabolic Syndrome Face Higher COPD Risk, Study Finds
27 Nov 2024 • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was associated with a significant increase in the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in young adults as per a recent study.
Over a mean follow-up period of 8.35 years, individuals with MetS had an 18% higher risk of COPD.
Among the individual components of MetS, abdominal obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL cholesterol were significantly linked to COPD development.
Hyperglycemia, however, did not show a significant association.
The study also found that the more components of MetS an individual had, the higher their risk of COPD, with the highest risk observed in those with all five components.
These findings suggest that young adults with MetS, particularly those with multiple components, are at increased risk for COPD and should be closely monitored for its early onset.
