COVID-19 Infection Linked to Sharper Kidney Function Drop Than Pneumonia
27 Dec 2024 • New findings suggest an association between COVID-19 and accelerated kidney function decline, especially among people who were hospitalized.
- A large cohort study tracking over 134,000 people with COVID-19 and nearly 36,000 with pneumonia rhas reported that kidney function declines faster after COVID-19, with an annual drop of 3.4%, compared to 2.3% for pneumonia.
- The decline was even more pronounced among those hospitalized for COVID-19, showing a 5.4% decrease.
People who were hospitalized for COVID-19 should receive closer monitoring of kidney function to ensure early diagnosis and optimized management of chronic kidney disease to effectively prevent complications and further decline.
