New Study Shows Higher Risk of Migraines and Epilepsy Following Pregnancy Complications
24 Dec 2024 • Pregnancy complications such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia are tied to an increased risk of new-onset migraine, headache, epilepsy, sleep disorder, or mental fatigue within months to years after giving birth.
The research, which tracked 648,385 first-time mothers over 15 years, found the strongest association between eclampsia and new-onset epilepsy, with a more than five-fold increase in risk.
Healthcare providers should closely monitor women with a history of these pregnancy complications for neurological symptoms during postnatal follow-up visits, in addition to cardiovascular risk assessments.
