Corneal Opacities Contributing to High Rates of Blindness in Older Indians

31 Jan 2025 • A national survey reveals a significant burden of blindness and visual impairment (VI) in India due to corneal opacities (CO), particularly among older adults.

In individuals aged 50 and above, the prevalence of avoidable blindness due to CO is 17.1 per 10,000, with 32% having no light perception in the affected eye. The cumulative prevalence of avoidable moderate to severe visual impairment or blindness due to CO is 26.9 per 10,000 in this group.

Risk factors such as age and lower educational status were linked to higher prevalence, while regional differences highlighted the northeast zone as having a lower burden.

These findings underline the need for targeted eye health interventions, focusing on the older population, to reduce the impact of corneal opacities on vision health in India.
