Impact of Vascular Anatomy on Surgical Outcomes in Left Pancreatectomy

7 Feb 2025 • A recent study has shed light on how vascular anatomy can affect the outcomes of left pancreatectomy procedures. The study revealed that differences in vascular anatomy, including the type of splenic artery (SpA type 2), can significantly increase surgery times.

In fact, SpA type 2 was linked to longer procedures (OR 2.77), with the pancreatic resection line located above the portal vein also contributing to prolonged surgeries (OR 3.47).

For those undergoing minimally invasive surgery (MIS), male sex (OR 9.07) and the location of the pancreatic resection line (OR 4.12) were associated with longer operations. In contrast, factors like high BMI and pancreatic body tumors were key contributors to extended surgery time in open pancreatectomy cases.

These findings underscore the importance of understanding vascular anatomy variations, suggesting that minimally invasive surgery, particularly robotic techniques, may help minimize the challenges posed by anatomical differences.
