Proteinuria: A Key Indicator for Atrial Fibrillation Risk Across Glycemic Stages
27 Jan 2025 • Both diabetes mellitus (DM) and proteinuria independently raise the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF), hence a recent population-based study was conducted to investigate the role of proteinuria in the development of AF across glycemic stages.
Key Findings: -As proteinuria levels rose, the incidence rates of AF increased from 2.46 to 8.18 per 1000 person-years. -Proteinuria heightened the risk of AF, with a stronger association observed in individuals with diabetes compared to those without. However, the connection between proteinuria and AF risk was consistent in both new-onset and established diabetes patients.
These findings suggest that individuals with proteinuria, particularly those with diabetes or prediabetes, should be closely monitored for potential cardiovascular risks like atrial fibrillation, helping to improve patient outcomes.
