Rising Global Burden of Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Low Physical Activity

9 Jan 2025 • A recent study highlights a significant increase in the global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attributable to low physical activity (LPA) between 1990 and 2021.

Utilizing the data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, researchers analyzed disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), mortality, and age-standardized rates (ASDR and ASMR) across regions, ages, genders, and sociodemographic index (SDI) levels.

Findings revealed a rapid rise in DALYs and mortality associated with LPA, with ASDR and ASMR increasing at an annual average percent change (AAPC) of 1.09% and 0.32%, respectively. Males and low-to-middle SDI countries experienced the highest ASDR and ASMR.

Population growth, particularly in low-SDI regions was a key contributor together with epidemiological shifts. The study emphasizes the urgent need for targeted public health strategies to manage T2DM by addressing physical inactivity.
