Onychomycosis Risk Spikes in Psoriasis Patients
21 Feb 2025 • Psoriasis patients are significantly more prone to onychomycosis, a new meta-analysis reveals.
Reviewing 13 studies with over 13,000 individuals, researchers found that those with psoriasis had a 1.68 times higher risk of fungal nail infections. Among those without clinical suspicion, the risk was even greater at 1.78 times.
The overlap in nail symptoms between psoriasis and fungal infections complicates diagnosis, making proper screening essential—especially before starting immunosuppressive treatments that could worsen fungal infections.
