Cervical Cancer Risk Soars with HPV and Vaginal Bacteria Co-Infection

17 Feb 2025 • A recent study in Dahanu taluka, Maharashtra, explored the association between cervico-vaginal infections and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in tribal women.

Key Findings:

  • Among the sexually active women screened, 6.5% were found to have HPV.
  • Bacterial vaginosis was the most common infection, affecting 41.5% of participants, and was notably more prevalent among HPV-positive women.
  • The presence of clue cells in vaginal smears pointed to a strong connection between bacterial vaginosis and HPV, suggesting that co-infection could heighten the risk of cervical carcinogenesis.
  • Other infections like candidiasis and chlamydia trachomatis were also detected in smaller proportions.

These findings stress the critical need for early detection and management of reproductive tract infections, which can help prevent co-infections and reduce cervical cancer risk in vulnerable populations.
