MoHFW Mandates Snakebite Reporting: A Nationwide Step to Combat Envenoming Deaths
28 Nov 2024 • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has mandated the reporting of all snakebite cases across healthcare facilities in India to strengthen surveillance and clinical management.
-
This directive aligns with the "National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming by 2030" (NAPSE), which seeks to reduce snakebite-related deaths by 50% by 2030.
-
Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava has issued instructions to state health authorities to establish mandatory notification systems, including private healthcare providers, to ensure accurate tracking of incidents and deaths.
-
States are also encouraged to classify snakebites as a 'Notifiable Disease' under public health laws.
An accurate reporting will help identify high-risk areas, assess intervention effectiveness, and improve clinical management of victims.
