USPSTF recommendations on Osteoporosis Screening: What You Need to Know

15 Jan 2025 • Osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone mass, increases bone fragility and the risk of fractures.

Osteoporotic fractures are associated with psychological distress, loss of mobility, reduced ability to perform daily activities, and even death. Among these, hip fractures have the highest morbidity compared to fractures at other sites.

Osteoporosis is particularly prevalent in people aged 65 or older. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for osteoporosis in women aged 65 years or older and in postmenopausal women younger than 65 years, as it may provide a moderate net benefit by preventing osteoporotic fractures.

However, insufficient evidence exists to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for osteoporosis in men to prevent such fractures. These recommendations are intended for adults aged 40 years or more who do not have a known diagnosis of osteoporosis or a history of fragility fractures.
