Type 2 Diabetes Increases Cardiovascular Risk Across All Stages of Atherosclerosis

23 Jan 2025 • Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are at a higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), regardless of the extent of atherosclerosis, finds study.

Key findings: -T2DM was a significant predictor of MACE, both in univariate analysis (HR = 2.43) and after multivariate adjustment (HR = 1.37).

  • MACE was more common in patients with T2DM compared to those without. While patients with severe atherosclerosis had the highest MACE rates, diabetes consistently predicted MACE across all stages of the disease.

T2DM remains a critical risk factor for heart disease, independent of the extent of atherosclerosis, and emphasizes on the importance of comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessments in diabetes care.
