Hypertensive Patients on Thiazides Face Elevated Fall and Syncope Risk
20 Feb 2025 • Hypertensive patients on thiazide diuretics faced a significantly higher risk of falls and syncope (32.2% vs. 19.5%), a new study reveals.
The risk was amplified by factors such as older age (AOR=1.38), heart failure (AOR=2.12), prolonged thiazide use (AOR=1.21), and electrolyte imbalances like hyponatremia (AOR=1.68) and hypokalemia (AOR=1.72).
Renal impairment further heightened susceptibility, with metabolic alkalosis increasing risk by 68%, acute kidney injury by 85%, and each 10 ml/min/1.73m² decline in eGFR raising risk by 22%.
These findings underscore the need for close monitoring of renal and electrolyte status in hypertensive patients prescribed thiazides, particularly those at higher fall risk.
