Vitamin D, also called the sunshine vitamin, is primarily involved in calcium and phosphate metabolism and bone mineralization. It has pleiotropic actions, many of which are still in the research domain, awaiting their validation by long-term outcome studies. Direct exposure to sunlight for a specific period, at a specific time of the day, depending upon one’s geographic location and melanin content of the skin, remains the major contributor to vitamin levels in our blood. Lack of vitamin D may lead to Rickets and Osteomalacia in children and adults, respectively. Let us discuss the sources of vitamin D other than sunlight, the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of vitamin D deficiency on 16th September 2025 at 9.0 pm on this platform with Dr. Mahadev Desai.

With many effective, safe and inexpensive lipid-lowering drugs, it’s important to identify and start treating dyslipidemia as early as possible. Lipid profile should be ordered at the first visit anytime after the age of 18 years. Dr. Desai will discuss various aspects of lipid profile, such as, should we get the lipid profile on a fasting or a non-fasting blood sample? Which values are important, directly measured or calculated ones? What are the parameters? What are the normal ranges? When should one order an extended lipid profile? Etc. Let us meet on 23rd January 2025 at 9:00 PM on Medflix to learn how to interpret blood lipid profile.

Earlier Death was defined as “Complete & Irreversible cessation of spontaneous Cardiac and Respiratory functions. American Academy of Neurology in 1995, first time defined Brain Death as “Irreversible cessation of function of the Brain, including the brainstem.” Declaration of Death by Brain Stem Death criteria has been given a legal recognition in India only in context of Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 (THOTA). It is very important to understand the difference between severe Brain Damage and Brain Death. Brain death means life support cannot bring back meaningful life. Brain Death is the principal requisite for Organ donations for transplantation. Due to paucity of availability of organs, there is a long wait list for organs by needy patients in India. Dr. Pranav Kharod, Senior Neurophysician and Dr. Mahadev Desai will discuss various aspects about Brain Death covering clinical neurological examination, step by step approach to diagnose Brain Death. Hemoptysis is spitting or expectoration of blood that originates below the vocal cords. It is essential to be able to differentiate it from pseudo hemoptysis & hematemesis. The most common causes are TB, Pneumonia, Ca - bronchus & bronchiectasis. A detailed history of necessary parameters including quantity, associated symptoms, drugs, h/o tobacco and occupational history along with physical and systemic examination can guide us in uncovering the cause for the hemoptysis. The routine investigations that are called for in this scenario are CBC, ESR, Sputum, X-ray chest, HRCT, Bleeding and coagulation profile and RFT. The priority in mild hemoptysis is to find the cause where as in the case of massive hemoptysis the priority is always to first stabilize the patient. Let us discuss the topic in details with Dr. Mahadev Desai on the 12th January, Monday at 9PM.

When the serum bilirubin level is 2.0 mg or higher, clinical indications of jaundice appear. In all circumstances, the first step in examination is a liver chemistry test that includes total protein, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, bilirubin (conjugated and unconjugated), and alanine aminotransferase. A step-by-step diagnostic process is required for an accurate diagnosis and a successful treatment plan since clinical presentations of yellowing of the eyes or skin can be relatively ambiguous for the underlying etiology of disease.
