MAFLD Linked to 71% Higher Odds of Gallstones
10 Dec 2025 • A 5-year retrospective study of 1,422 adults pinpointed metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) as a risk factor for gallstones.
Gallstones developed in 9.27% of those with MAFLD versus 5.67% without, reflecting a 71% higher risk (HR 1.71). Men showed a significant association (HR 1.54), while trends in women were weaker and non-significant. A nonsignificant increase across adults aged 30–60 was seen.
The findings position MAFLD as a key clinical marker for gallstone risk, reinforcing the value of early metabolic intervention to curb disease burden.
