Hyperglycemia Raises Risk of Eye and Brain Complications in Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants
2 Sept 2025 • In a neonatal ICU study of very-low-birth-weight infants, 44.7% developed hyperglycemia (>150 mg/dL), which was linked to higher risks of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) compared with normoglycemic infants.
Prolonged hyperglycemia (>72 h) significantly increased ROP risk, while severe hyperglycemia (≥220 mg/dL) independently raised IVH risk.
These findings highlight the importance of strict glucose monitoring and control in this high-risk population to reduce neurological and ophthalmological complications.
