Smoking as a Major Independent Risk Factor for Type 2 Diabetes
4 Aug 2025 • An analysis of 110,076 adults found that smoking is a significant independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D), with former and current smokers facing a 36% increased risk compared to never smokers (HR=1.36).
Heavy smokers (≥20 cigarettes/day) had more than double the risk of light or moderate smokers (HR=2.10). Combined heavy smoking and alcohol use did not elevate diabetes risk (HR=1.11).
These findings underscore smoking cessation as a critical target in diabetes prevention.
