Chronic Rhinosinusitis Tied to Higher Autoimmune Disease Risk
8 Sept 2025 • A meta-analysis of 86,081 patients found chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) significantly linked to systemic rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA; OR 1.70), systemic lupus erythematosus (OR 1.61), and ankylosing spondylitis (OR 1.48).
RA prevalence was particularly high, affecting 10% of CRS patients. Acute rhinosinusitis showed weaker ties, mainly with seronegative RA.
These results suggest mucosal immune dysregulation in CRS may drive systemic autoimmunity, highlighting the need for vigilance in monitoring CRS patients for early rheumatic disease signs.
