Glaucoma Surgery Cuts Recurrence in CMV-Related Uveitis
11 Sept 2025 • A retrospective study of patients with cytomegalovirus-induced anterior uveitis (CMV-AU) found that glaucoma surgery (GS) substantially reduced recurrence compared with antiviral therapy alone.
Key Findings:
- Over a median 29-month follow-up, recurrence frequency dropped by 77.4% with GS (2.39 to 0.54 episodes/person-year) versus 58.9% with medication only (2.92 to 1.20).
- Surgically treated patients had a 0.45-fold lower recurrence risk and significantly longer recurrence-free intervals (48.3 vs 20.5 months).
- However, GS was linked to corneal endothelial cell loss.
These results highlight GS as a powerful strategy to lower CMV-AU recurrence despite potential ocular risks.
