Severe Kidney Anomalies in Newborns Greatly Increase Mortality Risk
12 Aug 2025 • Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) markedly raise perinatal and neonatal mortality, with affected neonates showing 7.2% early mortality and a 25-fold higher risk vs controls (HR 25.1).
Poor outcomes were linked to prematurity (HR 1.7), low birth weight (HR 2.4), very low birth weight (HR 2.9), oligohydramnios (HR 3.2), extra-renal malformations (HR 2.6), and severe CAKUT types—cystic kidney disease (HR 3.8), lower urinary tract obstruction (HR 5.1), and kidney agenesis/hypodysplasia (HR 5.1).
Findings highlight the need for early detection, intensive prenatal monitoring, and multidisciplinary care.
