Air Pollution Exposure Raises Risks of Ketoacidosis and Other Complications in Type 1 Diabetes

4 Nov 2025 • According to new research, individuals with type 1 diabetes may be more susceptible to major complications when exposed to air pollution.

In a study involving 12,925 individuals, those exposed to higher annual levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) showed a 28.8% increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, a 33.5% increased risk of ocular problems, and a 35.1% increased risk of neurological disorders. Short-term (30–90 day) exposures also elevated the risk of ketoacidosis.

The researchers suggest that air pollution–induced oxidative stress and inflammation may worsen glycemic instability and microvascular injury in type 1 diabetes Clinicians are urged to consider environmental exposures when managing metabolic control and long-term complications.
