Infants with Congenital Heart Disease Face Sharp Rise in Seizure and Mortality Risk
27 Oct 2025 • Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) were nearly six times more likely to experience seizures than those without CHD (aOR 5.7), according to a US national analysis.
Mortality was also significantly higher in CHD infants who developed seizures (8.5% vs 1.1%; aOR 3.6), along with longer hospital stays. Single-ventricle physiology (3.2%) carried the highest risk, trailed by left-sided CHD (1.9%), shunt lesions (1.8%), and cyanotic CHD (1.2%).
Male sex, maternal hypertension, sepsis, acute kidney injury, stroke, and ECMO support further increased seizure risk. Early neurologic monitoring is crucial to detect and manage these high-risk cases.
