Cardiometabolic Risks Surge in Women with Irregular Menstrual Cycles
27 Oct 2025 • A meta-analysis of over 3.5 lakh women has revealed that irregular menstruation significantly heightens the risk of both cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
Key Findings:
-
Women with irregular cycles had a 43% higher risk of overall cardiovascular disease (RR 1.43) and a 62% higher risk of cerebrovascular events (RR 1.62) compared to those with regular cycles.
-
Risks of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and heart failure were elevated by 29%, 50%, and 45%, respectively (RR 1.29, 1.50, and 1.45).
-
Metabolic risks also rose sharply, with diabetes risk up by 75% (RR 1.75) and hypercholesterolemia by 33% (RR 1.33).
The findings underscore the need for routine cardiovascular and metabolic screening in these women.
