Retinal Damage in Myopia Signals Higher Glaucoma Risk
14 Oct 2025 • An analysis of 929,142 myopic patients found that retinal sequelae of myopia markedly increased the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and its progression.
Key Findings:
- Foveal retinal detachment showed the strongest association (AOR 5.82), followed by foveoschisis (AOR 3.10) and myopic macular degeneration (AOR 2.87).
- Patients with foveoschisis (HR 5.33), MMD (HR 2.74), macular hole (HR 1.73), choroidal neovascularization (HR 1.73), and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (HR 1.54) progressed faster from glaucoma suspect to POAG.
These findings support proactive glaucoma screening in myopic patients with retinal complications to prevent vision loss.
