Low Bone Score Signals Hidden Cardiovascular Risk
10 Dec 2025 • Low lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS)—a tool used to assess osteoporosis—may also signal increased cardiovascular risk, a large study hinted.
Of 66,572 adults aged ≥40 years followed for 9.5 years, major adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 22%, including myocardial infarction (4.2%), stroke (3.7%), and all-cause mortality (18.6%). Each standard deviation drop in TBS raised MACE risk by 13% (aHR 1.13), increasing to 19% (HR 1.19) when individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular disease were excluded.
The findings support TBS as a dual-purpose marker that could help uncover hidden cardiovascular risk during routine osteoporosis evaluations, enabling earlier preventive action in vulnerable patients.
