High Burden of Allergic Rhinitis Uncovered Across India
5 Sept 2025 • A multicenter study of 40,001 patients with nasal symptoms across 19 Indian states found allergic rhinitis (AR) in 53.7% using the SFAR questionnaire, underscoring its high burden.
Sneezing was most common (69.1% overall; 86.8% in AR-positive), with house dust mites as the leading allergen (73.8%).
Symptoms peaked from October to January, and nearly 50% reported a family history of asthma, eczema, or AR. Yet, fewer than half had a doctor-confirmed diagnosis, and only 31.5% underwent allergy testing.
These findings highlight the underdiagnosis of AR in India and support SFAR as a practical screening tool for early detection and management.
