Migraine Identified as Independent Risk Factor for Central Serous Chorioretinopathy

3 Nov 2025 • Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a retinal disorder caused by choroidal vascular hyperpermeability and retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction. While corticosteroid exposure is a well-known risk factor, new evidence suggests migraine may also play a role.

In this large study of over 413,000 adults aged 18–40, migraine was associated with a two-fold increased risk of CSCR compared with controls (1.43 vs 0.51 per 10,000; HR 2.74).

The association remained robust across sex, migraine subtypes, and medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and beta-blockers. The finding emphasizes the need for ophthalmic vigilance in individuals with migraine.
