Point-of-Care Ultrasound Accurately Detects Pediatric Appendicitis
7 Nov 2025 • A UK study showed bedside ultrasound can reliably diagnose appendicitis in children.
Among 226 children aged 1–16 with right-sided abdominal pain, point-of-care ultrasound identified cases with 89% sensitivity and 96% specificity. Accuracy closely matched radiology-performed imaging (Cohen’s kappa 0.87). Positive and negative predictive values were 0.76 and 0.98, respectively.
The findings suggest point-of-care ultrasound could reduce diagnostic delays and limit radiation exposure in pediatric emergency settings.
