Hemorrhoidal Disease Linked to Increased Dementia Risk

6 Oct 2025 • A large cohort study of 381,000 adults followed for a median of 15.5 years found that hemorrhoidal disease (HD) was associated with a significantly higher risk of dementia.

Overall, 22.5% (80,488 cases) developed dementia, and even after propensity score matching, HD was linked to a 24% greater risk (HR 1.243) compared to those without HD.

Interestingly, patients who underwent surgical or procedural treatment for HD had a reduced dementia risk (HR 0.925).

Researchers suggest that while hemorrhoids may not directly cause dementia, they could signal underlying systemic processes—such as chronic inflammation or vascular dysfunction—contributing to cognitive decline.
