Early-Onset Gestational Diabetes Tied to Higher Postpartum Glucose Intolerance
8 Oct 2025 • A study comparing women with early-onset (<24 weeks) and late-onset (≥24 weeks) gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) found that postpartum glucose intolerance occurred significantly more often in early-onset GDM (EGDM), despite similar pregnancy outcomes.
The risk was especially high among non-obese women with lower baseline insulin secretion capacity but comparable insulin resistance.
These findings suggest that impaired insulin secretion, rather than insulin resistance, drives the higher risk of postpartum glucose intolerance in EGDM, highlighting the need for closer postpartum monitoring and individualized management in this group.
